Tenbit Emiru, M.D.

Dr. Tenbit Emiru is a mission-driven physician executive with a distinguished career leading clinical and operational transformation across health plans and provider systems. With deep expertise in population health, value-based care, and health equity, Dr. Emiru has a proven track record of shaping enterprise-wide strategy to improve outcomes, enhance member and patient experience, and drive financial sustainability. 

As Chief Medical Officer of UCare, she provided strategic and operational oversight for clinical programs serving hundreds of thousands of members, managing teams of physicians, nurses, and operational leaders. Dr. Emiru spearheaded the design and execution of innovative care models, including integrated care management, utilization management redesign, and pharmacy cost-saving initiatives projected to save tens of millions annually. These efforts strengthened CMS Star Ratings, advanced quality benchmarks, and reduced disparities in access and outcomes for complex and underserved populations. 

Previously, as a physician leader in an academic health system, Hennepin Healthcare, she transformed system-wide delivery of care in neurosciences, established award-winning clinical programs, and developed the next generation of physician leaders. Prior to Hennepin Healthcare, Dr. Emiru was a Medical Director of Critical Care Neurology for HealthPartners/Regions Hospital. 

Known for building collaborative, high-performing teams, Dr. Emiru is recognized as a trusted partner across highly matrixed environments and a respected thought leader in healthcare strategy and innovation. A board-certified Neurologist and Neurocritical care physician, Dr. Emiru thrives in fast-moving, complex environments that demand both analytical rigor and visionary leadership. Dr. Emiru was recognized as Most Notable BIPOC Executive by Twin Cities Business in 2025, Notable Alumni in 2025 by University of Minnesota, College of Liberal Arts, a “Top Doctor” by Minnesota Monthly in 2018 and 2020, and among the “Top Docs and Rising Stars” by Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine in 2017 and 2018. She serves on the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice and on the Board of CHC (Creating Healthy Communities). Dr. Emiru earned her BA, Ph.D., and M.D from the University of Minnesota, and MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
