Joy King, President

Joy King is Chief Advancement Officer of NMDP, and Executive Director of NMDP Foundation. NMDP is a leader in cell therapy finding cures and saving lives for patients diagnosed with blood cancers and disorders. Joining the team in 2016, Joy’s primary role is to shape the foundation’s strategy, lead the government affairs and legislative policy work, advance our brand, sponsor our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, and aid in the overall direction of the organization. Her leadership aids NMDP in creating a world where every patient can receive their lifesaving cell therapy. 

In her time with NMDP, Joy has secured the first of many principal gifts in the history of the organization. Additional successes include launching NMDP in Mexico, funding research programs to reduce post-transplant complications, providing increased grants for patient assistance, aiding in diverse recruitment to the donor registry, and first-ever comprehensive $100 million campaign. She successfully leads our brand transformation, which aligns our organization with one brand identity and an inspiring call to action. In addition, Joy leads and sponsors our diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy that impacts our internal culture and our external promises, all while closing the disparity among our patient population. 

Joy brings over 20 years of experience to advance the life-saving mission of NMDP. Her career began with the American Cancer Society in 2000 as a Field Representative for Relay For Life in Texas. Elevating to the role of Senior Vice President of Operations for the Midwest division of the American Cancer Society, overseeing 250 staff members with an annual fundraising goal of $32 million. She is passionate about curing cancer and serves as an executive leader, board member, and transformation catalyst. Joy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Tarleton State University, is a member of several Minneapolis-based and nationally recognized women’s leadership organizations, a board member of NMDP Mexico, The Women’s Health Leadership TRUST, and Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc.’s Emerald Foundation. She is also a member of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy. Joy has also been recognized by the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journals as a 2015 Women in Business, Twin Cities Business Magazine’s Best In Class Healthcare Executives, Greenspring’s 500 Most Powerful Business Leaders in Minnesota, and Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives.
