Tory Merhar, Associate Vice President, Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota
What is your current role?
I have been a dedicated leader at Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS) for the past eight years, holding various leadership roles. Most recently, I served as the Associate Vice President of Older Adult Services. In this role, I emphasized the importance of social determinants of health, early intervention and social justice in providing social services to individuals across Minnesota, with a particular focus on the older adult population. My commitment to these principles ensures that the services provided are equitable, accessible and impactful for those in need.
Why did you join the TRUST & what is your role?
I joined the TRUST five years ago. I was inspired to join the TRUST because I sought a mentor who could relate to navigating the health care field and my passion for leadership. I chose this organization because I respected the women from my organization who were members and saw joining as an opportunity to gain knowledge and insights from leaders in the industry.
I have served on the Leadership Development Committee, have been a mentor and a mentee and currently serve as the Treasurer and Incoming Chair of the Associate Board, which allows me to be on the Finance Committee.
What has been your favorite part of being a TRUST member?
My favorite aspect of being in the TRUST is the opportunity to learn, lead and connect with other women navigating their professional and personal lives with a shared passion for becoming better leaders.
What one word would you use to summarize what the TRUST means to you?
Empowering.
What is the best career advice you’ve received?
The best career advice I received was to lead authentically. When you bring your true self to the role, others recognize and respect it, which in turn encourages them to bring their whole selves as well.
How do you support other women in their leadership journeys?
Helping others succeed is my driving force. I support women in their leadership journeys by mentoring, nurturing connections, modeling leadership and encouraging them to see the potential that others see in them. This is how I help others pursue their dreams.
What do you love the most about the health care industry?
I appreciate that the health care industry values the role of social workers and recognizes that a person’s health encompasses more than just lab scores or test results; it considers the whole person. This field provides opportunities for innovation and compassion to work together seamlessly.
How do you maintain or improve your health and well-being?
To maintain my health and well-being, I find it essential to have something to look forward to, such as a planned trip or an upcoming getaway with friends. Having these goals helps me set healthy boundaries and maintain a strong work-life balance, keeping me motivated and refreshed.
Who inspires you?
I am deeply inspired by individuals who tackle challenging tasks with determination and heart, particularly those who openly share their struggles, encouraging and inspiring others not to give up.
