Andrea Berg, MHA, Director of Strategic Planning, Elevance Health

What is your current role?

I recently transitioned from the provider side of health care, where I spent 15 years, to the payer side. In May 2024, I joined Elevance Health as the Director of Strategic Planning. Formerly known as Anthem, Inc., Elevance Health is a leading health insurance company offering a comprehensive range of services, including medical, pharmaceutical, dental, behavioral health, long-term care and disability plans through affiliated brands like Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Wellpoint, and Carelon. In my role, I analyze trends and collaborate with leadership to develop growth strategies for our individual health insurance business.

Why did you join the TRUST & what is your role?

After being encouraged by a dear friend and colleague, I became a member of the TRUST in 2020. What truly drew me to this community was the people. The TRUST is a vibrant network of welcoming, intelligent and authentic women from diverse sectors of health care. We come together to learn from one another and provide mutual support, fostering an environment of collaboration and growth.

I’m a member of the TRUST Associate Board and also serve on the Membership & Marketing Committee.

What has been your favorite part of being a TRUST member?

My favorite aspect of being a member of the TRUST is the generous support and time that members share with one another.

What one word would you use to summarize what the TRUST means to you?

Empowering.

What is the best career advice you’ve received or best mentoring experience you’ve had?

I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my career to have both formal and informal mentors who believe in me and invest their time in my growth. Choosing mentors is a careful process for me, as it’s all about trust. I seek out individuals I admire both professionally and personally. The best—and most recent—advice I’ve received is to maintain a list of 10 things that must be true for me to accept or remain in a role. This list serves as a constant reminder of my personal and professional values as I navigate my career journey.

How do you support other women in their leadership journeys?

I believe it’s my responsibility to support and help shape the next generation of women leaders in health care. One way I do this is by working closely with college students, graduate students, administrative interns and fellows. I truly appreciate the infectious energy, thoughtful questions and innovative ideas they bring to the table. I’m continually humbled by how much my mentees teach me in return.

What do you love the most about the health care industry?

I’ve felt a deep connection to the mission of health care since childhood. I know I’m in the right role and organization when the focus is on service and making a direct, positive impact on my community.

How do you maintain or improve your health and well-being?

Nature and exercise are my reset buttons, helping me find balance and clarity. I love being outdoors and staying active, whether it’s running, biking, hiking, camping or even tackling yard work.

Who inspires you?

My sister Rachelle inspires me every day. Diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at just 36, she faced this battle with incredible grace, strength and humor while her life was thriving with career and family. For four years, she showed us all what courage truly looked like before she passed away in 2019. Her journey has fueled my desire to be part of the solution, ensuring that no one else has to endure what she and our family went through. That’s why I joined the board of Susan G. Komen. I believe that by continuing to fund and advance research, we can work toward a world without breast cancer.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

My loved ones…and coffee.

Words of wisdom to live by?

Be part of the solution.
