Rachel Henely Metz, Vice President, Government Programs Strategy, Optum Rx

What is your current role?

I work with Optum Rx’s direct government programs clients to provide consultative leadership for all regulated markets. I positively influence trends with well-defined and executed bid management strategies and effective product solutions. I joined Optum Rx in September 2022 with 30 years of experience in the pharmacy benefit management industry.

Why did you join the TRUST?

I first gained exposure to the TRUST through a former colleague who invited me to several Forum events. Experiencing the power of networking opportunities, I made the decision to join the TRUST in 2017 and have been a board member since 2019. I was chair of the Sponsorship committee, a member of the Forum committee and am now chair-elect for the Strategic Growth and Marketing Committee.

What has been your favorite part of being a TRUST member?

Developing connections with other members of the TRUST is my favorite part – having coffee, lunch, happy hours to get to know each other better and looking for opportunities to engage in a more meaningful way has been a tremendous benefit for me.

What one word would you use to summarize what the TRUST means to you?

Powerful.

What is the best career advice you’ve received?

The best career advice I’ve received is life advice I received from my mom at a very young age (and throughout my life): Believe in yourself. As you try new things, make decisions, support others…just believe in yourself and your instincts. I have reflected on this advice in many different situations – especially when I start to compare myself to others or play the “could of, would of, should of” head game. The advice grounds me and motivates me to continue to lean into my knowledge, skills, experience and network to push forward while further developing myself.

How do you support other women in their leadership journey?

I spend a lot of time working directly with other female leaders, at all stages of their careers and enjoy being a sounding board for them to develop their own thoughts and ideas. I’ve worked closely with several leaders as a part of their ongoing career journey to help them define when they are ready for the next opportunity, shape what that opportunity looks like to them, and develop their career stories to be the best candidate possible. It is so rewarding to witness this growth and development in others.

What do you love the most about the health care industry?

The direct connection to our members. When we develop a product to meet the needs of consumers and see the positive contribution to the lives of many, it is absolutely fulfilling my career passion.

Who inspires you?

I am now at the age where I am truly inspired by my children. I’ve learned from them to be present in the moment. As they’ve grown, we have focused on being flexible and adaptable in most situations. Blooming adulthood is inspiring.

Words of wisdom to live by?

Be the change you wish to see in the world. This quote speaks to me as a message to focus on what I can do to help others and improve outcomes. Instead of waiting for others to act, it propels me to step forward to take action.
