Anne Gass, Director of Operations and Finance, Pinky Swear Foundation

What is your current role?
I’ve been with Pinky Swear Foundation since January 2023. I’m driven by the mission and inspired by the original pinky swear promise between a nine-year-old boy, Mitch, and his dad to keep helping kids with cancer even after Mitch passed away.
Why did you join the TRUST and what is your role?
I joined the TRUST mid-2023. At the time, I’d recently transitioned from an organization with several hundred staff to an organization with 15 staff. While I loved the new opportunity, I also missed the built-in network. A dear friend and colleague, Kristin Naruko, encouraged me to get involved.
In 2025, I’ll begin serving on the Associate Board in the Treasurer role.
What has been your favorite part of being a TRUST member?
Connection! From the very first new member coffee I attended and each interaction since, I find myself in the presence of women who genuinely want to learn about my work and find ways we can support one another.
What is the best career advice you’ve received?
Be the leader you want to work for, and use your leadership voice to recognize those who may not be in the same ‘room.’
Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that significantly influenced your leadership style or professional path?
I was working in a project management role when my leaders encouraged me to consider people management. I was initially hesitant due to my self-doubt, so she found an opportunity I couldn’t refuse…I could remain in my current role while supervising an intern. That strategic nudge was exactly what I needed, as I’ve sought people management roles ever since.
How do you approach mentoring others?
I think mentorship, like any relationship, begins with establishing trust and getting to know each other’s strengths. When asked for advice, I try to always give it in the form of a story based on an experience I’ve had.
How do you balance the demands of your professional and personal life?
Sometimes better than others! I hold myself to a consistent sleep and exercise schedule as much as possible. I also keep a list of to-dos, which both helps me remember all of the details of the day and also helps me acknowledge those to-dos as accomplishments of the day. And on really demanding days where stress is getting the best of me, my husband’s sense of humor usually keeps me in check.
How do you maintain or improve your health and well-being?
I’m a morning person, so I exercise in the morning when I have the most energy. I also have a very active dog who holds me accountable as my running/walking partner. I also love to be outside in nature as much as possible hiking, gardening, or just relaxing on my patio.
Words of wisdom to live by?
Unapologetically live your values.
