Vivian Anugwom, MHA, MS, CHES, Director – Health Equity & Patient Education, Allina Health

What is your current role?

I have the privilege of leading health equity system strategy development and the patient education department at Allina Health. Our goal is to ensure that healthcare delivery is inclusive and equitable and that our patients can access health education in the best way for them.

Why did you join the TRUST?

I had attended several TRUST events before officially joining the organization in 2021. A friend and colleague suggested I join the TRUST to connect with other women health care leaders in our community. It was an easy decision to join the TRUST because many women I admire are active members.

I don’t serve in a role yet; however, I’ve expressed interest in joining committees focused on developing the next generation of health care leaders with a focus on increasing diversity in health care leadership. I look forward to becoming a more active member of the TRUST!

What has been your favorite part of being a TRUST member?

It is inspiring to learn about the amazing work and leadership journeys of other women leaders. The stories of others help keep me moving forward when work gets tough.

What one word would you use to summarize what the TRUST means to you?

Empowerment

What is the best career advice you’ve received?

The best advice I’ve received is to remember that you can always learn something new in every work environment, even when you feel stuck. It could be a new skill, or it could be something you discover about yourself. Regardless of what it is, there’s always a lesson that will serve you well in the next phase of your career.

How do you support other women in their leadership journey?

I try to be available to offer advice or guidance when I’m asked. I especially make time for younger women interested in leadership. I am so grateful to the women who supported me on my journey. I want to do the same for other women, especially young Black women who are often overlooked for leadership positions or don’t see their potential.

What do you love the most about the health care industry?

I love that most people in the health care industry are mission-driven and truly want to contribute to improving the health and well-being of all.

How do you maintain or improve your health and well-being?

I am learning to listen to my body and figure out what I need to care for myself, especially when I’m going through periods of high stress. I recently started Pilates and I love it! It is an amazing way to improve my mobility and decrease stress.
