Healthcare: Accountable Care Organizations’ Trajectory & Rethinking Value in Health Care

Date: Thursday, October 27, 2022

Time: 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM

Location: Zoom

For more than 15 years, many in the health care policy arena have focused on initiatives, such as Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), that aim to promote greater value in health care. While oversimplified, value for these purposes is generally regarded as a balance of the quality and costs of care. Recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) began soliciting participants for a new ACO model: the Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Access, and Community Health (ACO REACH). This discussion will explore the ACO REACH model, examine the outcomes from value-driven policy, and encourage health care leaders to rethink our concepts of value in health care.

Matthew Anderson is a senior lecturer in the Health Policy and Management Division of the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health and the founder of Atrede Consulting, which provides policy, governance, and strategy services to nonprofit and public organizations. He served as Assistant Commissioner for Health Care and State Medicaid Director for the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), where he led an administration overseeing the state’s Medicaid and Minnesota Care programs that provide health coverage for more than 1.3 million low-income and vulnerable Minnesotans. Prior to joining DHS, he held executive leadership roles in the Minnesota Hospital Association and as the Intellectual Capital Leader and Principal for Mercer’s Government Human Services Sector. Before transitioning his career to health care, Anderson served as an attorney for the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. He graduated from St. John’s University and received his law degree from the University of Minnesota.
