Joy King, President

Joy King is the Chief Executive Officer of Animal Humane Society, one of the nation’s leading animal welfare organizations, headquartered in Golden Valley, Minn. Animal Humane Society provides direct medical and behavioral care to thousands of animals in need every year, provides resources to the community to keep people and pets together, and works to compassionately and responsibly create a more humane world for animals.

Prior to joining Animal Humane Society, Joy served as Chief Advancement Officer of NMDP, and Executive Director of NMDP Foundation for nine years. NMDP is a leader in cell therapy, finding cures and saving lives for patients diagnosed with blood cancers and disorders. Joining the team in 2016, Joy’s primary role was to shape the foundation’s strategy, advance our brand, sponsor our diversity, equity and inclusion strategy, lead the government affairs and public policy team, and aid in the overall direction of the organization. Her leadership helped NMDP create a world where every patient can receive lifesaving cell therapy.

In her time with NMDP, Joy secured the first of many principal gifts in the history of the organization. Additional successes include launching NMDP in Mexico, funding research to accelerate progress and expanding access for patients by addressing the number one patient-reported barrier to care, which is financial. She and her team successfully launched the first-ever comprehensive $100 million campaign at NMDP. She successfully led the organization’s brand transformation, which aligns the organization to one brand identity and an inspiring call to action.

With over 25 years of experience, her career began with American Cancer Society in 2000 as Field Representative in Texas before being elevated to the role of Senior Vice President of Operations, for the Midwest division of the American Cancer Society, overseeing 250 staff members with an annual fundraising goal of $32 million. She is passionate about mentorship, leadership, and sponsorship and serves as an executive leader, board member, and transformation catalyst.

Joy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Tarleton State University, is a member of several Minneapolis-based and nationally recognized women leadership organizations, a board member of The Women’s Health Leadership TRUST, Animal Humane Society Veterinary Clinic, and the Minneapolis Downtown Council. She is a member of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy. Joy has also been recognized by many organizations, including the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journals as a 2015 Women in Business, Twin Cities Business Magazine’s Best In Class Healthcare Executives, Greenspring’s 500 Most Powerful Business Leaders in Minnesota, and Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives.
